State treatment of foreign investment in the midst of Venezuela’s economic crisis: expanding the resource frontier in the Orinoco Mining Arc
Lead researcher: Antulio Rosales, Centre for Development and the Environment, University of Oslo
The project deals with the dramatic expansion of Venezuela's extractive frontier through large-scale mining south of the Orinoco river. The case allows conceptualizing the interplay of indigenous demands, foreign investors' interests and state policy in the midst of the downturn in commodity markets and a deep economic crisis. It contributes to debates in international political economy and development studies on the expansion of mining frontiers and the collapse of rentier states.
