Searching for solutions: Dependence and local aspirations among rural Mapuche in neoliberal Chile

Lead researcher: Martine Greek, Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo

Based on one year of ethnographic fieldwork in a rural Mapuche community in Southern Chile, this research analyzes how development politics unfold and allow for social and economic change. Attending to everyday life in this community, it traces the links between state presence and different ways of being Mapuche, focusing particularly on the intersection between local aspirations, processes of differentiation and new forms of dependence.
