MILENs second international conference, to be held 22. – 23. November, at the University of Oslo, will aim to build on the success of the first conference, held in November 2010. The conference is intended to solidify and expand MILENs international network; provide a forum for the presentation of cutting edge research on sustainable energy and environment; and to stimulate interdisciplinary cooperation and new thinking through exposure to theory, methods, analytical approaches and examples.

The Interfaculty research area LEVE - Livelihoods in developing countries. Health, poverty, and the evironment has been in operation since 2009. At this year's conference they will present some of the findings and results from the research in their affiliated research groups and projects.

Rio +20 marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations' Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) also referred to as the Earth Summit, in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. For this event, we have invited former Minister of Environment and Development Erik Solheim, the delegates present in Rio 1992, as well as the new 2012 generation in order to discuss today's climate-related challenges and the opportunities ahead in the run-up to Rio+20.

The recently assumed government of Guatemala has elaborated a broad progam to confront organized as well as common crime and strengthen the justice system. President Otto Pérez Molina has also called for a regional dialogue on new methods to confront drugtrafficking, including analyzing the decriminalization of distribution and consumption ofdrugs. If agreed by the other Central American countries, the proposal will be taken to the upcoming summit of the American states.

As part of SUM’s focus on sustainability, we will be holding a series of events to mirror the process of the Rio+20 Earth Summit. Using the themes of the roundtable events being held in the run-up to the Earth Summit, we will hold a three-day mini conference on March 2-4, 2012. The event will take place at two different venues. The first part will be open seminars at Litteraturhuset in Oslo (March 2-3). The second part will consist on a weekend cabin trip for PhD and Master’s students (March 3-4) combining workshops, discussions, and outdoors activities.
