Norwegian REDD Research Network
The network is open to all researchers at Norwegian research institutions that work on and have an interest in REDD-related research.
The REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) is a negotiation area in global climate politics centered on producing an international financing framework to encourage developing countries to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and foster conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
Background
Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative is significantly shaping its bilateral relations with forest-rich developing countries. Beyond providing financing to governments, Norway is also supporting advocacy, capacity building and demonstrational REDD projects proposed and undertaken by civil society and other third parties. The Norwegian REDD Research Network has received support to build Norwegian competence in policy areas related to REDD implementation and strengthen relations with researchers in the South through networking activities. A secretariat hosted by SUM has the overarching coordinating role and is supported by a steering committee with representatives of the five collaborating institutions.
Norwegian REDD Research Network was established on the initiative of SUM and FNI in collaboration with CICERO and NINA, with financial support from NORAD’s Climate and Forest Initiative.

Aim
The network aims to,
- To maintain a collaborative network of Norwegian researchers from relevant academic fields (subsequently to be enlarged to include researchers in the South, and other researchers in the North)
- To encourage researchers to identify, conduct, and disseminate research of relevance for REDD.
- To maintain a national database of researchers and expertise.
- Organise national workshops for mutual exchange of ideas and results.
- Arrange seminars and workshops for students at PhD and MSc level (this component to be covered by own funds).
- To provide small-scale funding for REDD-related workshops and engagement activities.
