Reconfiguring Citizenship in India: Rights, Welfare and Identity -- CANCELLED

Seminar with Niraja Gopal Jayal (Jawaharlal Nehru University, India).

In this seminar, Niraja Gopal Jayal analyses recent attempts to reconfigure citizenship in India. While some such attempts are being contested by various new popular movements, others that are “packaged” as new welfare initiatives meet with less opposition. This also has important implications for political representation, in between the embattled liberal system, the new populist claims by the Aam Admi Party, and the 'Caesarism' of the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party.

The seminar is co-organised with the Departments of Political Science, and Sociology and Human Geography, UiO.

Niraja Gopal Jayal is Professor at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University.
