China in Africa

The seminar will focus on the complex mix of opportunities and challenges that arises from the growing China-Africa relationship.

Background

China is now Africa’s largest trading partner and an important development partner and investor for the continent. This expanding China-Africa relationship is often presented in simplified terms as either malign or benign to Africa’s development; yet Chinese actors are as diverse as the contexts they operate in, espousing at times competing and contradictory interests.

Presenters:

  • Ulrikke Wethal (SUM, UiO): "Symbolic claims and pragmatic approaches in Sino-African development cooperation: Experiences from Mozambique"
  • Heidi Østbø Haugen (ISS, UiO): "Sino-African Migration as a Driver for Trade"
  • Helge Rønning (IMK, UiO): "The Voice of China in Africa – Media and Communications”
